Gboru Andrew shares his experience and sentiments on how the social media has its effect on our youths

Effect of social networking on our youths
One afternoon during a long journey, I stumbled on one Lindiwe Anderson who I learnt is suffering from Asperger’s syndrome ( a mild coupe of Autism – a mental condition in which a person finds it very difficult to communicate or form relationships with other), I marveled looking down I saw Lindi’s phone, I was shocked as she was surfing the internet chatting and smiling. I wondered, what could she be doing? How come the smiles? Although, she never uttered a word throughout the journey but made sounds customary to her illness. Social Networking…
Indeed, the whole issue of Information Communication Technology (I.C.T), is somehow complicated. Just like a war which everybody tells the story from his own point of view. I.C.T to many has a subjective cognition even to Lindi. The concept I.C.T can be used interchangeably with the word media or social network. In our world today one has to be knowledgeable in reading, evaluating, creating text and images or any combination of these elements to be considered media literate.
Media in every age is the greatest singular factor which prevails the culture of that age, this is not excluding our time. The role played by I.C.T is made manifest as human activities aimed at conveying meaning, relation with one another also sharing or exchanging ideas, is made easy and with ultimate possibility.
The Social Network as a division of the whole business of communication is also just like war easier analyzed, having multi-dimensional views.
Technology, such as social media websites have become prominent part of life for many young people today, but what is it really, its negative or positive effects in the society and family now more concerned with these social networks than our daily lives? Examples of Social Networking sites explored by the youths includes.
facebook,twitter,2go,badoo,bbm,watsap,blackbook,yahoomail,google,quip, etc.
There are many positive aspects and there are equally many dangers that come with these social networks among the youths.
We have to critically dig into this in order to be aware of all the sides of social networks before we or our children (family) indulged in it.
Social networking can act as great tool for professionals, both helping to market skills of small business owners, upcoming youths and also find opportunities for youths.
There is promotion everywhere of the vast spread of introvertism through Social Networking Chats as many youths find it difficult to begin physical interaction with same sexes and opposite sexes.
Another scary fact about youths and the internet is that they are too open with personal information; most youths do not read website privacy, most youths are not concerned about people they talk with online things appear to be less worried about or cared for when they are been posted online.
Without reading disclaimers and policies it opens the youths to having their personal information divulged. This is serious, due to the rising rates of cyber crimes like identify thefts and impersonation, fraudulent act.
Once you are a victim of identity theft or even a virus of computer, there isn’t much you can do to make it better, thus, the best way is to avoid this misery and apply caution when interacting in these social media.
Social networking may be harmful to the well being of your gadgets as hackers can get access to your information very easily by using tactics such as social engineering.
Social engineering plays human nature to get results.
New studies by Nick McGillivray, has shown that facebook can actually influence you to spend more money through advertisement on the cover of your screen. One other vice is cyber bullying, why by individuals use the social sites to harass and use insulting words to threaten or intimidate, which mostly occur in media sites.
Indeed, new research by Reader’s Digest shows that heavy social use might be correlated to lower self-control, which marketing experts believe could lead to inflation.
Ultimately, the way you counter this, is by raising your self-awareness, Columbia University, Professor Keith Wilcox.
In many cases, it is clear that social networking has become not only part of people’s lives, but also revolve round it. We see people on smart phones every minutes looking for the newest tweet or status updates from friends. We find out that internet officials bring validity to things in our lives, thereby acclaiming the canon of our moral lives. We have to understand that this is a great tool and not a lifestyle for youths.
In the meantime, Social Network is not usually for entertainment only, but information as well, as an antidote to time wasting, youths should be trained in reading, study, silence and meditation. No matter your situation there is a great role played by social networking in our day to day life.
